Welcome to Global Warming Initiatives

Global Warming Initiatives (GWI) is a North Carolina-based, non-profit organization dedicated to improving energy efficiency methods and reducing greenhouse gas emissions of communities, businesses and industries.

In 2003, GWI incorporated to continue reporting North Carolina carbon dioxide emissions to the Voluntary Reporting of Greenhouse Gases (VRGG) program under the federal Department of Energy.

The Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initially sponsored GWI’s preceding pilot program, known as Climate Wise, which reported emissions for 21 corporations in NC from 1995 to 2000.  The U.S. Climate Wise funded $60,000 a year for the NC Climate Wise pilot program, which was equally matched by funds from the North Carolina State Energy Office.  When the Climate Wise program ended, the emissions reporting project transitioned to Global Warming Initiatives, a non-profit organization.

Currently, GWI reports to the DOE VRGG program for 35 facilities, representing 22 corporations, and is expanding its operations to work with more communities, businesses and industries worldwide.  (See Page 2 for corporations.)

Our Mission

67000

The mission of GWI is to promote and report the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions for communities, businesses and industries in North Carolina.

Developing Partnerships

Through our efforts, we hope to develop partnerships with a variety of government, corporate and non-profit programs such as the following:

·          U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

·          U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

·          U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC)

·          U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

·          GreenVest

·          World Energy Engineering Congress (WEEC)

·          Appalachian State University

·          Chicago Climate Exchange

·          The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI)

What We Do

GWI introduces our participants to the agencies and methods that show them how to use energy efficient methods, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and decrease pollution and waste.

We gather data for all energy used and GHG emissions produced by a facility. After analyzing this data, we provide the facility with a Corporate Energy Management Program (CEMP) to integrate efficiency techniques into its daily operations.

We then conduct quarterly follow-up evaluations to monitor our participants’ progress.  At the end of the annual reporting cycles, we convert all collected data into equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) and submit each participant’s annual report to the DOE VRGG program, the EPA’s Energy Star Industrial Sector Program and other relevant programs, such as the International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives.

Seminars and Education Programs

We promote education about environmental issues and energy efficiency through regional seminars with our current and future participants.

We also present educational programs to other groups and schools to provide education about global warming, greenhouse gases and energy efficiency topics.

NC Climate Change Registry

GWI has created a “North Carolina Climate Change Registry” to initiate North Carolina’s participation in the Federal Greenhouse Gas Registry, also known as the DOE’s Voluntary Reporting of Greenhouse Gases (VRGG) program.

The NC registry will include the following NC programs that currently report to the DOE’s VRGG program:

·          Landfill Methane Outreach

·          Climate Challenge (Utilities)

·          Global Warming Initiatives

The NC Climate Change Registry also includes current proposals to decrease North Carolina’s GHG emissions. The registry will be available soon on the Global Warming Initiatives website, www.gwi-nc.org.

Cap and Trade

GWI is working with emissions trading brokers such as NatSource and the Chicago Climate Exchange to educate our participants on how to trade GHG emission credits as profitable commodities.

GWI participants will be able to trade GHG emission credits on either the U.S. or international markets.
